ZAMCOM AND EIZ COLLABORATE TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNICATION CAPACITY AMONG ZAMBIA’S ENGINEERS

Lusaka, Wednesday 08th April, 2026 - The Zambia Institute of Mass Communication Educational Trust (ZAMCOM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) aimed at strengthening capacity building, strategic communication, and professional development among engineers in Zambia. The agreement marks a significant step in equipping Zambia’s engineering professionals with the communication competencies required to operate effectively in an increasingly complex and public-facing professional environment.

The partnership will see ZAMCOM and EIZ jointly develop and deliver a range of accredited short courses, workshops, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes tailored specifically to the engineering profession.

The collaboration reflects a growing recognition within the engineering profession that technical expertise, while essential, must be complemented by strong communication skills. Engineers are increasingly required to engage communities on infrastructure projects, present technical findings to non-specialist audiences, respond to media inquiries, manage reputational risks, and advocate for their organisations and the profession in the public arena. The ZAMCOM-EIZ partnership is designed to address this gap in a structured, profession-specific, and practically-oriented manner.

The training programmes under this MoU are designed to equip engineers with critical communication competencies that are increasingly essential in modern professional practice. These include strategic communication to effectively position engineering work, stakeholder and community engagement to build trust and collaboration, and professional and technical report writing to ensure clarity and precision in documentation. In addition, skills in reputation and crisis management, media relations, public communication, and digital and social media engagement will enable engineers to navigate complex public environments and amplify the impact of their work. To ensure these skills remain practical, relevant, and aligned with industry expectations, the curriculum will be jointly developed and continuously reviewed by both institutions in line with evolving sector needs and EIZ standards.

The training will be delivered through a participatory and practice-oriented methodology, combining expert presentations, practical exercises and simulations, group discussions, peer learning, and case studies drawn from the engineering sector. This approach ensures that participants do not only acquire knowledge but develop practical, immediately applicable communication skills that enhance their professional effectiveness.

The partnership represents a significant advancement in the professional development landscape for Zambia’s engineering sector, supporting improved public engagement, stronger stakeholder relations, and enhanced professional credibility for engineers across all sectors of the economy.

This collaboration represents a strategic milestone for ZAMCOM, reinforcing its role as a leading institution in professional communication training and consultancy. It demonstrates ZAMCOM’s ability to extend its expertise beyond traditional media training into sector-specific capacity building, positioning the institution as a key partner in national development. By collaborating with EIZ, ZAMCOM is not only expanding its footprint within the engineering sector but also affirming the growing relevance of communication as a critical professional skill across industries. This MoU further strengthens ZAMCOM’s transition into a 360-degree communication hub, delivering impactful, industry-aligned training solutions that enhance professional standards, visibility, and influence across Zambia’s key sectors.

The Memorandum of Understanding will remain in force for an initial period of three years, during which the two institutions will collaborate on training delivery and explore additional opportunities for professional development and institutional cooperation.
